Drawing - Running Horse

December 15th, 2006 - For Briana’s 10th Birthday she chose a horse as the subject she’d most like me to draw for her. Although she knew the subject, she didn’t know what I would choose, so there would still be an element of surprise. I looked up horse images on Google and narrowed the final choice down to this one because of the beautiful lines and muscles showing while the horse is running. Up to this point, this is the picture I spend the most amount of time on… probably over 20 hours. This is a bigger drawing too. It’s on a full sheet of paper.

Drawing - Nautilus

November 25th, 2006 - Many times I just flip through the nature book looking for subjects to draw. I found the nautilus to be both a fascinating animal, and it had some wonderful lines and shades to it for attempting to draw.

Drawing - Spiny Rats

November 16th, 2006 - I’m back trying to work through my fur issues :) Fur and feathers still are very hard for me to get to look realistic and not just lines on paper. This image looked like a good one to try. Plus it had a lot of negative space that I could try bringing the subject to the foreground with a darker background.

Drawing - Baby Alligator

November 11th, 2006 - I took quite a long break from drawing, but finally picked up the pencil again and got to work. The image looks a little weird but is from a real photograph of a baby alligator hatching out of it’s egg. No particular reason that I remember for choosing this image to draw.

Drawing - Multi - Aleah’s 7th Birthday

July 1st, 2006 - I have never believed in giving from the wallet, and would rather give from the heart, but had not practiced it much. This year I decided that I would not give my daughters store bought presents anymore and start creating things from the heart.

Aleah is a bird lover, so it was an easy guess as to what she would like me to draw for her. I did subtly ask her what her favorite bird was (The Elf Owl) so I could make sure to include it. I decided to draw her 5 different pictures and a note to put into one of those montage frames. Here are the results.

Drawing - Vine Snake

June 21st, 2006 - After the successful Ladybug drawing, I was looking forward to another color picture. In the book I had been using there way a very colorful and eye catching image of this Vine Snake on the flowers. However I really underestimated how much the background made the whole picture and wasn’t prepared to color the whole background in. So to my eye, it looks incomplete.

Drawing - Ladybug

May 29th, 2006 - Interesting story with this drawing… My daughters and I were outside playing around and saw some orange eggs on the trees outside. I was pretty sure they were Ladybug eggs, so we carefully cut off a set of them and brought them inside with some leaves that had aphids on them. After a day or two they hatched, started eating the aphids and pupated into adult Ladybugs (Well only 2 survived out of 20 or so, but we tried). So this drawing was to commemorate the lesson we all had of seeing the Ladybugs grow from eggs to adults. I drew the Ladybug, eggs and leaf from a book, but freehanded the larva and aphid.

Drawing - Flying Squirrel

May 25th, 2006 - I chose this picture to draw next for a few reasons. One, the squirrel has enormous expressive eyes, and two, I need to practice on fur. It’s also a pretty cool action shot. In the end I didn’t finish it in the time I had set aside for drawing that day, and the next day didn’t feel like continuing it. So it’s more incomplete than normal.

Drawing - Takahe

May 13th, 2006 - Another drawing chosen for practicing color pencils. It’s a very colorful bird and one I’d never seen before besides in this book. It’s about time I try feathers out again and see if I can do better. Practice makes perfect.

Drawing - Swallowtail Butterfly

May 11th, 2006 - It’s time to try out colors. I have pastel pencils but have so far avoided doing anything in color. Now is a good time to try. While color can bring out the true image you’re trying to draw, it also can be difficult to learn to shade properly. I wanted to start with something basic enough but still vibrant, so settled on a favorite butterfly of my youth… the Swallowtail butterfly. I used to catch these all summer long as a kid.
