Drawing – Moai of Rapa Nui
April 20th, 2006 – Following along the desire to increase my shading ability, I chose this picture as it was cast in deep shadows with strong highlights. I drew the outline, but after that all the rest was done with shading only, attempting to use different techniques like crosshatching or pressure to get the desired results.
Analysis – Quite another improvement in shading. I had to learn to go very very dark to get where I wanted to go with this. The ear especially was a success on bringing out the 3D nature of the subject… hard shading changes along with smooth transitions. There is still much to learn, but seeing the improvement is great.

Note – I’ve decided to start posting my drawings to my blog. For a few reasons… To share the art, to stimulate me to draw more, and to keep a record of them all. Click on the small image to get the larger size view. There will be a small flood of posts as I put up all of my back dated drawings, then only as I produce new works.
