Drawing – Takahe

May 13th, 2006 – Another drawing chosen for practicing color pencils. It’s a very colorful bird and one I’d never seen before besides in this book. It’s about time I try feathers out again and see if I can do better. Practice makes perfect.

Analysis – Although the colors were fun to use, it’s such a fantastically colored bird that it throws off the drawing as to my eye at least it seems more like a cartoon. Laying down darker colors along with black and white for highlighting and shadow was new for me, but I was starting to get the hang of it. I also threw in graphite pencil in some places which doesn’t work as well… my old fallback. Overall I think the shadows and highlights came out pretty nice, but I need to use the color itself more in the shade variations than using black.

Note – I’ve decided to start posting my drawings to my blog. For a few reasons… To share the art, to stimulate me to draw more, and to keep a record of them all. Click on the small image to get the larger size view. There will be a small flood of posts as I put up all of my back dated drawings, then only as I produce new works. :)

  • You’ve never seen one before because there are only about 10 in the world and they all live on Tiritiri Matangi Island in New Zealand. Make sure you don’t miss it when you come visit :) Beautiful drawing by the way, I particularly like the way you have drawn it’s face and feet. You really capture a realistic expression.
