Drawing – Parrots

July 15th, 2006 – Another birthday for my daughter Aleah. Since they now know what they’re getting for their birthday, they start asking for certain subjects. Aleah asked me to draw a few different types of birds, and so I chose these for their colors and poses. Although they weren’t originally in the configuration you see here, I drew them in this way to give a representation of Me and my two daughters.

Analysis – Although I have gotten very comfortable with deep shading using a graphite pencil, the pastel pencils are much harder to get the effect I am going for. I don’t yet know if it’s the pencils or just my technique, but I find it very hard to get a good clean solid color out of them. Using just the blue pencil, I tried to make the majority of the shading, but couldn’t get it as dark as I would have liked. The smaller lovebirds were a pleasure to draw as they were small enough that I could really spend some time on the brightness and shades.

Note – I’ve decided to start posting my drawings to my blog. For a few reasons… To share the art, to stimulate me to draw more, and to keep a record of them all. Click on the small image to get the larger size view. There will be a small flood of posts as I put up all of my back dated drawings, then only as I produce new works. :)
