Drawing – Woman in shadows

February 1st, 2007 – Ah! The beauty of a woman! The human body is a wonder of shades, highlights and textures. It’s also one of the most difficult things to draw because we are so adept at picking out flaws in the human form. Faces and hands are the most difficult part, so I chose a picture where the face was hidden and I could just focus on the body.

Analysis – The shading work I did here is magnificent if I say so myself. I used negative space to show highlights in some areas and a technique of smearing to really present a smoothness to the legs. I should have used the smearing technique throughout as the upper body in the darker areas you can see the lines created by the pencil. It’s those little attention to detail items that really start to make a drawing come alive. The ribs showing, the delicate folds of the stomach, the rippling shadows of the shoulder, and the dark shadow underneath the arm and breast all work to really present depth.

Note – I’ve decided to start posting my drawings to my blog. For a few reasons… To share the art, to stimulate me to draw more, and to keep a record of them all. Click on the small image to get the larger size view. There will be a small flood of posts as I put up all of my back dated drawings, then only as I produce new works. :)

  • Wow! This is really beautyful!

  • her hands are horrible, they look like man’s hands, the shades on them are quite awful too.

  • very nice picture, but needs to improve the form of hair

  • draw is strong

  • her arms are way to muscular. looks almost like a tranny. i really like the pose and the torso, it was well done. maybe a little work on the hair, hands and feet, and it would be awesome! very nice shading and value :)

  • I don’t like the hair and the muscles…

  • This is great work despite some details.
You should try to focus more on the character of alive beings when drawing them, you seem to do it well and we would enjoy the beauty of this world more! When I see this drawing, I end up am wondering how the expression of the woman would be ..mmhhhh

  • This is absolutely beautiful. I agree, the hands, feet, and hair needs a little work. Other than that, the drawing is fabulous. I believe that the muscles give the woman amazing character & should be kept in the drawing. wonderful.
